Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *srɯʔ, *srɯs): semantic 亻 + phonetic 吏 (OC *rɯs). However, the phonetic component should add part of the meaning since it represents a hand holding perhaps a flag to mean "representative, ambassador". Compare Burmese စေ (ce, “to order, send someone on an errand”) (Luce, 1981).
