Etymology

Pictogram (象形) — variously analysed as a radiant feather headdress (as worn in the 皇舞, a ritual dance for celestial worship; a blooming flower (original form of 葟 (OC *wˤaŋ), or a blazing flame (original form of 煌 (OC *wˤaŋ)). These share a common visual motif of outward radiance — rays or petals emanating from a centre — also reflected in the derivative 凰 (OC *wˤaŋ, “phoenix”). Later evolved into phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, *wˤaŋ): semantic 𤼽 + phonetic 王 (*waŋ). Bodman (1980) proposes a connection with 王 (OC *ɢʷaŋ) "king" (see there for more information).
