Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *quls): semantic 卜 + phonetic 鬼 (OC *kulʔ). In the bronze inscriptions, 心 and 攴 were sometimes added. During the Warring States period, the 卜 corrupted into 止. Hsiao-ting Li: In oracle bone script form, this character depicts a ghost 鬼 standing and holding a stick. Shuowen mistakes the small seal glyph as a ghost head (甶) with part of a tiger, including its claw. Exoactive derivative of 威 (OC *qul, “to overawe”), lit. "to be intimidated" (Schuessler, 2007).
