Etymology

Pictogram (象形) – a covered head/face in the oracle bone script. Bronze inscriptions added dots to a prominent head (shaped like 白). There likely exist two opposing phonosemantic word families: "exposed/visible" (e.g. 白 (OC *bˤrak) vs. "covered/invisible" (e.g. 黑 (OC *m̥ˤək). From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-maŋ ~ s-mak. Cognate with 墨 (OC *mlɯːɡ, “ink”). The sense of “hack” is a phono-semantic matching of English hack.
