Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *mreːwɢs): abbreviated phonetic 豹 (OC *preːwɢs) + semantic 皃 (“looks”). Originally written as 皃 (OC *mreːwɢs, *mreːwɢ), which is a pictogram (象形) of the face. Note a very strong formal match with Burmese မြောက် (mrauk, “to reach the apex, be consummated”). Though the semantic gap is non-trivial, a sense relation "reach the top" > "that which exists on the top or surface" > "outward appearance, expression" appears feasible.
