Etymology

The upper component 𦉶 is attested independently in Shang oracle bone script, showing a large 目 (“eye”) with a short hooked stroke. Jiang Yubin (蔣玉斌) identifies it as the original character for 獨 (“alone”), while Chen Jian (陳劍) and Guo Yongbing (郭永秉) read it as 矚 (“to gaze intently”), taking the non-目 portion as a figure leaning on a staff. Both words belong to a *dok family associated with focused vision and conspicuousness (cf. 燭 (“to illuminate”)). The form with added 虫 (“insect”) first appears in Western Zhou inscriptions for the Shu place name; Shuowen Jiezi reanalyzes it as a pictogram of a silkworm. Attested as early as in Western Zhou oracle bone H11:68: 伐蜀 (attack Shu), H11:97: 克蜀 (defeat Shu).
