Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *pan, *ban): semantic 艸 (“grass”) + phonetic 番 (OC *paːl, *paːls, *pʰaːn, *pʰan, *ban). The same word as 繁 (OC *ban). Cognate with Tibetan དཔལ (dpal, “glory; splendor; abundance; magnificence”) (Unger, 1986).
