Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɦljumʔ): semantic 艸 (“grass; plant”) + phonetic 甚 (OC *ɡljumʔ, *ɡljums). Area word; compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɗum ~ *ɗuum (“ripe; ripe-coloured”) (> Khmer ទុំ (tum, “to be ripe”)), Proto-Kuki-Chin *ɗum (“black; blue”), *thim (“dark”) (Schuessler, 2007; STEDT). Also compare 黮 (OC *l̥ʰuːmʔ, *l'uːmʔ, “dark (as a mulberry)”).
