Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *maːŋʔ, *moːʔ, *maːʔ): phonetic 茻 (OC *maːŋʔ) + semantic 犬, and also ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): semantic 茻 + semantic 犬 (Li Xueqin, 2012). Compare Chepang माङः (mang', “a kind of tall, thick-stemmed grass with very small seeds”) (Schuessler, 2007).
