Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *baːŋ): semantic 肉 (“meat; flesh”) + phonetic 旁 (OC *baːŋ). Probably cognate with 膊 (Schuessler, 2007). Alternatively, it may be related to etymology 3 since the shoulders are on two sides (Liu, 1999).
