Etymology
Corrupted from 恥; first used in Eastern Han dynasty. Listed as an unorthodox form (俗字 (súzì)) in the Kangxi Dictionary. Superficially a phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声): semantic 耳 + phonetic 止 (OC *kjɯʔ). Officially adopted as simplified from 恥 in mainland China.
