Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *piː, *bis): semantic 竹 (“bamboo”) + phonetic 𣬉 (pí). Related to 比 (OC *pis, *bis, “dense; closely packed”) (Shiming; Wang, 1982; Zhengzhang, 2003). Compare 梳 (OC *sŋra, “comb”), usually thought to be related to 疏 (OC *sŋra, “sparse”).
