Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *bral): semantic 疒 (“sick”) + phonetic 皮 (OC *bral) – sick and tired. Disputed; which etymology to believe hinges entirely on whether or not to reconstruct a medial -r- in Old Chinese. * If a medial -r- is not reconstructed, STEDT and Schuessler relate this to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *bal (“tired; thirsty”), whence Burmese ပန်း (pan:, “to be tired”) (STEDT; Schuessler, 2007; Hill, 2019) * Hill (2014), who reconstructs a medial -r-, maintained a connection to Tibetan བརྒྱལ (brgyal, “to faint”), though as seen in Hill (2019), he appears to have abandoned this connection in favor of the former theory.
