Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *l'iːŋs) and ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): semantic 人 (“person”) + phonetic 田 (OC *l'iːŋ, “field”). Exopassive of 田 (OC *l'iːŋ, “field”), literally "what is being/has been cultivated" (Schuessler, 2007).
