Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *quːɡs, *quɡ): semantic 水 (“water”) + phonetic 奧 (OC *quːɡs) Schuessler (2007) considers the word as borrowed from Austroasiatic, comparing Vietnamese ao (“pond”) and Mon ဩ (“small bay”), but it is thought that the Vietnamese was borrowed by the Chinese, and that this is an areal word of unclear ultimate origin.
