Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ʔl'um): semantic 木 (“wood; tree”) + phonetic 甚 (OC *ɡljumʔ, *ɡljums). STEDT derives the sense "chopping block" from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mV-kum (“pillow, block, bench, bedstead”), whence also 枕 (OC *l'um, *ʔljumʔ, *ʔljums, “pillow”). But this etymology is impossible under Baxter and Sagart's reconstruction (the onsets are incompatible).
