Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *laː): semantic 木 (“tree”) + phonetic 耶 (OC *laː). Attested as early as the Jin dynasty (晉朝). Compare earlier form 楈枒 (OC *sŋa/sŋaʔ ŋraː/ŋraːs), 胥邪 (OC *sŋa/sŋaʔ ljaː/laː), 胥餘 (OC *sŋa/sŋaʔ la) (attested since Han dynasty). Li Shizhen thinks 椰 (yé) is possibly derived from 爺 (yé), a native Southerners' word for tribal chiefs (Bencao Gangmu, 31). Compare to Proto-Chamic *laʔur.
