Etymology

Originally written as 椶, a phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ʔsoːŋ): semantic 木 (“wood”) + phonetic 㚇. The phonetic component was later replaced by 宗 (zōng). Wang (1982) relates it to 總 (OC *ʔsloːŋʔ, “to collect”), 稯 (OC *ʔsoːŋ, “sheaf; bundle”), 鬃 (OC *ʔsoːŋ, “mane”).
