Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *qaːŋʔ, *qraŋs): semantic 日 (“sun”) + phonetic 央 (OC *qaŋ). Denominal derived from 影 (OC *qraŋʔ, “shadow; image”) (Gong, 2019). The 上聲 pronunciations in Cantonese, Gan and Hakka come from 影 (MC 'jaengX).
