Etymology
* (to take a walk): From the drug reaction of famous scholars during the Northern and Southern dynasties after taking 五石散, which is said to be composed of minerals such as amethyst, white quartz, red quartz, stalactite, and sulfur, and has strong toxicity. After taking it, the body would feel hot, and when the drug took effect, one had to walk to dispel the effects. Hence the saying 行散 or 行药. Although 五石散 gradually disappeared from the historical stage, the method of walking to dispel the effects was retained and evolved into what is now known as 散步. * (to take JLPT): Borrowed from Japanese 散歩 in the sample text of JLPT's listening test sound check: : 天気(てんき)がいいから、散歩(さんぽ)しましょう。 Tenki ga ī kara, sanpo shimashō. Because the weather is nice, let’s take a walk.
