Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *koːŋ, *kuːŋ): phonetic 工 (OC *koːŋ, “work”) + semantic 攵 (“hand holding a tool or weapon”). Traditionally seen as related to 工 (OC *koːŋ); see there for more. STEDT instead compares this word to Proto-Kuki-Chin *khooŋ (“to beat”) and Tshangla ཀོང་མེ (kong me, “to strike”). Accepting STEDT's comparisons, this allows the reconstruction of Proto-Sino-Tibetan *koŋ (“to beat, strike”). ; “top; seme”
