Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *brɯːl): semantic 扌 (“hand”) + phonetic 非 (OC *pɯl) – to place in line. Note resemblance to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s/m-ba ~ *s/m-baːy (“to throw”), whence Burmese ပယ် (pai, “to reject, disqualify”).
