Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ɢʷen): semantic 扌 (“hand”) + phonetic 肙 (OC *qʷeːns). The pronunciations in many varieties with velar plosive or palatal affricate initial are from 蠲 (MC kwen) (Li, 1988). With that in mind, compare possibly Burmese စွန့် (cwan., “to discard; to risk”).
