Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *tʰaːɡ, *tjaɡ): semantic 扌 (“hand”) + phonetic 石 (OC *djaɡ). Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-t(j)ak (“upper surface, top, above, palate; to climb, lift, ascend”) (STEDT). See Burmese တက် (tak, “to climb up, get in a vehicle”) for more cognates.
