Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *tŋ̊ʰraːɡ): semantic 手 (“hand”) + phonetic 斥 (OC *ŋ̊ʰjaːɡs, *ŋ̊ʰjaːɡ). Originally written 𢯪, differentiated from 𡍩/坼 by changing the semantic 土 (“earth”) to 手, emphasizing the act by hand. The Mandarin pronunciation cā is directly borrowed from the Wu pronunciation ⁷tshaq.
