Etymology
Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): 鹿 (“deer”) + 土 (“soil, dust”) – cloud of dust produced by a (group of) running deer. Ancient simplification of 𪋻, which pictures three deer on top instead of one. From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r-durl (“dust”). Cognate with Tibetan རྡུལ (rdul, “dust, particle”).
