Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ŋos): semantic 宀 + phonetic 禺 (OC *ŋo, *ŋos). Possibly related to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *r/s-ŋ(y)a (“to borrow, lend”) (whence Burmese ငှား (hnga:, “to idem”)), though the semantic gap is rather non-trivial (Luce, 1981).
