Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *slɯɡ): semantic 女 (“woman”) + phonetic 息 (OC *slɯɡ). From the reinterpretation of the first syllable of 媳婦／媳妇 (xífù, “son's wife”) as "son's wife". Note 媳婦／媳妇 (xífù) was originally also written as 息婦／息妇 (son's wife), composed of 息 (xī, “son”) + 婦／妇 (fù, “wife”) (Shi, 2008).
