Etymology

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *hmɯːn): semantic 女 + phonetic 昏 (OC *hmɯːn). Speculated since the Han dynasty to be related to 昏 (hūn, “dusk”), under the rationale that weddings take place around dusk. Schuessler (2007: 289-290) notes down but is unconvinced by this semantic derivation but appeals instead to an association of femininity with darkness, akin to 陰/阴 (yīn). Hill (2019: 219) would rather relate this to Tibetan སྨྱན་ཀ (smyan ka).
