Etymology

Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): 木 (“sapling”) + 丮 (“kneeling person; to hold”) – a kneeling person planting a sapling, hence “to plant”. The original character of 蓺 and 藝. Sometimes 土 (“soil”) was added underneath the sapling; the two then merged into unrelated 坴, with the top component 圥 resulting from corruption of 木. The 丮 component on the right side of the character evolved into 丸. This character 埶 (OC *ŋeds) was also often phonetically borrowed to represent 勢 (OC *hŋjeds, “influence; power”).
