Etymology
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ljɯs): semantic 口 (“mouth”) + semantic 冊 (“document”) + phonetic 司 (OC *slɯ). It originally referred to appointing the successor to the ruler through speech and documents, and by extension, expresses the idea of “succeeding.”
