Etymology

Core meaning likely "empty, hollow" → "vast, boundless," derived from the resonant interior of the instrument 庚 (OC *kraːŋ). The sense "paved courtyard/temple path" represents an open linear passage between structures. Perhaps related to 途 (OC *l'aː, “road”) (Wang, 1982). Schuessler (2007) alternatively compares Proto-Austroasiatic *glɔːŋ, whence Mon ဂၠံၚ်, Kensiu gəlɔŋ, Kuy [script needed] (khlù:aŋ). The use of "唐" (Tang Dynasty) to mean "Chinese" is because the Tang Dynasty is viewed by Chinese people as one of the golden ages of their history.
