Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *ʔsaʔ, *zaʔ): semantic 口 (“speech”) + phonetic 且 (OC *sʰjaːʔ, *ʔsa). From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *dzaʔ (“to eat; food; to feed; rice”); cognate with Tibetan ཟ (za, “to eat”), Burmese စား (ca:, “to eat”), Chepang [script needed] (jeʔ-sa, “to eat”), Japhug ndza (“to eat”) (STEDT; Schuessler, 2007; Zhang, Jacques and Lai, 2019). Possibly related to 餐 (OC *sʰaːn, “to eat; meal”) (STEDT; Schuessler, 2007).
