Etymology
Pictogram (象形): 人 (“person”) + 水 (“water”) + 人 (“person”) – two people fleeing with their backs to a flood (Yu Xingwu, 1999). Some oracle bone script variants are written identically to 化 (one upright person and one upside-down person). Meng (2022) suggests that this variant uses 化 as a phonetic component due to their phonological connection in Old Chinese. Shuowen, without access to oracle bone script, considered it a pictogram (象形) of cracks formed on a heated tortoise shell or bone during divination. Compare Chepang ह्रावःसा (hrawʔ‑, “to forebode; to portend ill fortune”).
