Etymology
Pictogram (象形) – a square well, with supports on four sides. Some forms have a stone inside the well, as in 丼. Alternatively, original character of 刑, 形 and 型. Schuessler (2007) minimally reconstructs pronunciation *tseŋʔ for sense "well" and *dzeŋʔ for "pit" and considers both to be possibly unrelated to each other; furthermore, he relates *tseŋʔ "well" to Tibetan རྫིང་ (rdzing, “pond lake”) and *dzeŋʔ "pit" to Tibetan སྡིངས་ (sdings, “cavity, depression”).
