Etymology
九 (jiǔ, “nine”) + 尾 (“tail”) + 狐 (hú, “fox”), literally “nine-tailed fox”. Early attested in pre-Qin or early transmitted mythological and omen literature, such as the Shanhaijing, the Yi Zhou Shu, and the Bamboo Annals. In early sources, the nine-tailed fox is especially associated with 青丘 (Qīngqiū), and is usually described either as an extraordinary beast or as an auspicious omen connected with kingship.
